Tri-folded document in excellent condition dated 1848 and conveying ownership of One Negro Boy Smith aged about 21 years, valued at two undress fifty dollars.  Approximately 8x13 inches.  Front he state of Tennessee.  Very light foxing and stains to the edges.

In Tennessee, where plantations covered hundreds of acres, the slave population was large. Three to four of every five persons, depending on the county, was a slave. By 1860, slaves made up roughly one-fourth of the population of Tennessee.
