German WWII Luftwaffe tropical field cap maker-marked Karl Halfar and dated 1941. Constructed from lightweight khaki cotton fabric designed for tropical climates, the cap features a soft visor and two side ventilation eyelets. The front displays a machine-embroidered Luftwaffe eagle above a woven national cockade, both sewn onto the cap's band. A black leather chinstrap is secured by two grey plastic buttons stamped with Luftwaffe runes. This style was issued primarily in late-war campaigns in North Africa and southern Europe.
The Luftwaffe tropical visor cap is commonly known among collectors as the “Hermann Meyer” cap, a nickname rooted in a famous boast by Luftwaffe commander Hermann Göring. Göring allegedly declared that if enemy bombers penetrated German airspace, people could call him “Meier,” a common German surname. As Allied bombing raids intensified, the name became a sarcastic reference to Göring’s failed promises and the Luftwaffe’s inability to defend Germany.
