The Schlageter Badge (Schlageterschild) was instituted in 1933 to commemorate Albert Leo Schlageter, a German nationalist and former Freikorps member executed by French authorities in 1923 for sabotage during the occupation of the Ruhr. Schlageter became a celebrated martyr of the German nationalist movement and was subsequently honored by the National Socialist regime. The badge was awarded through a veterans’ association to former Freikorps members who had participated in Germany’s post-World War I paramilitary conflicts. Issued in several patterns, the decoration could feature crossed swords and campaign clasps recognizing service in specific regions or operations. The award was discontinued following the dissolution of the sponsoring association in 1936.
This badge features two battle commemorations. The reverse is marked with the maker's imprint "Paul Ernst Abzeichen u Ordenfabrik Berlin SW 19" along with patent information (Geb. Gesch.)
