This is a very cool set consisting of an original Deutschland Erwache standard, an ORIGINAL front-plate mounted on a piece of wood, presumably by a veteran, an original black DE Cross Poll, and tassels. The set was assembled by a collector from various sources. Here are details concerning the material:
The flag was originally sold by wehrmacht-militaria.com. Here is the Wehrmact-Militaria listing for the flag ONLY that sold for $33,000. According to Bill, it was brought home by Private Clauzelle B Cox of 552 AAA Battalion B Battery, the standarte was found inside the jacket of a surrendering German officer in March of 1945. I do not have any physical provenance, but I'm sure Bill can help the winner with this.
The front plate and cross poll and tassels were purchased either from Ben Weed himself before his death, or from the Ben Weed collection after his death. This, according to the owner. The tassels are the "type II" tassels that feature the later style clip. I have a photo of this exact clip in use in an incredibly close-up picture from the period. I'm looking for it, and will provide it either in this auction, or after it ends, to the buyer. The plate is the actual front plate to an SS DE. It has a crack in the middle, but looks great as a display item.
Please note: when the flag was originally sold by Bill, it had black mold growing on it. I took it to an advanced conservator in Los Angeles, and they put it in a sealed tank of nitrogen gas for up to six weeks, to kill mold and all spores. They then conserved the silk to remove the dead mold. So, the flag looks much better now!
When the flag set was originally consigned to me, I had been under the impression that it all came from one veteran, but I have since learned of the origin of each piece, which has been stated above. I took the liberty, back in February, of constructing an identically aged plate, for the "other side" of the box, and had it mounted on similarly old wood. It looks amazing, and it's also included (but not yet pictured).
Overall, a GREAT display set!
