Description

German World War I M18 steel helmet with a period, hand-applied camouflage pattern in tan, red-brown, and green, divided by black lines. The paint shows age-consistent wear with scattered surface scratches and handling marks, but retains strong overall coverage.  Color is very bright compared to other examples.  Inside is an M16-style liner (with leather attachment band) instead of the later metallic band- a typical late-war mix of components.  Side flange has manufacturer number of Si66, and interior dome has steel lot number.  Interior shows very little rot or damage whatsoever, just minor age and grime.  Drawstring intact!

The M18 was the final wartime version of the German Stahlhelm, introduced to improve comfort and protection. Camouflage finishes like this were ordered in 1918 to help break up the helmet’s outline in the field, and were hand-applied by soldiers in the field.  As is typical for camouflage helmets, the original German green paint remains intact on the interior.  This is a choice example.
